I’m always looking for ways to increase my visibility and skills. There are so many opportunities to advance ourselves……we just have to seize that moment when it calls!
Home staging and “fluffing” has been one area I’ve worked hard at over the years: giving my client’s spaces new vision with the added bonus of functionality. One day someone asked if I could do some work for them, then the journey began. Again, did I know exactly how to do all this? Crap, no! Just went for it and kept proving myself over and over again.
What this involves is the knowledge of different styles, how this family lives, and what they expect from you. I’m the kind of designer that finds out what they’re after, then LEAVE ME THE HECK ALONE because I get totally confused if someone is staring at me while I’m working. When they’re gone I get so much freedom with creative juices flowing around my brain.
Add on sales are a must with this venture. I’ve sold permanent designs, accessories and fresh plant creations by having them with me for the client to see, or suggesting I create for this or that location. You can’t imagine how this helps your cash flow.
Trust me, this ain’t something that just happens. You need to put it out there that you have these skills, act on them, and don’t waver in what you charge. I get a hefty amount for my time without a problem one. I make sure they get their money’s worth with a fun experience that makes their home a prime vision to enjoy for the next couple months. Then I’m back again to restage their space for a new look…..or maybe they need a friendly face to justify their new purchase, placing it in the right spot. Now that’s a trusting relationship for fun AND profit!
With day in and day out floral work, you might not realize the impact you have on the world. Creating floral gifts does make a difference in someone’s life, the “shock and awe” that someone thought so much of the recipient to send them flowers. It’s your honor to go the extra mile with your talent. Taking the time to saw, cut, and re work items to enhance the design gives them so much more to elevate their soul. Tropical flowers brighten any table, and this trio is the perfect setup for a glass topped unit. Small with creative interest, these are the kind of designs that capture our eyes with vivid hues and multiple textures . With clustering of different product you can achieve this style using anything you have on hand. Continue reading Tropical Trio Delight→
Nature is definitely all around us, begging to be recreated into beautiful floral designs to capture our audience. These birch branches, succulents, and evergreens became the focus for this primitive, Native American designed wall piece…..along with a few faux touches for accent.
Using fresh birch gives this piece it’s arching movement (you’ll need a few thinner pieces to add for thickness) to bend into the shape you want using pieces of 22 gauge wire to attach together. I added a somewhat horizontal branch to help the design keep it’s shape and to have another surface to dangle items from; the more visual movement the better! Fun times to work on outdoor stone posts like this……I’m thankful for the opportunity. Another challenge to show the stuff we’re made of as well. These beautiful posts needed some Holiday décor to greet the season’s guests to this grape growing horse ranch. As usual I jumped on it! Continue reading Holiday Outdoor Garland→
With a throwback to the awesome 70’s (I embrace that decade with a whole lotta soul) terrariums again reveal themselves as wonderful plant designs. These units combine modern essence with charm that add those creative touches we love in our décor schemes. Terrariums are so easy to create with very low cost while being great gifts for you or your client base to share. Continue reading Terrarium Art→
I’m a designer that enjoys having tons of materials around me to choose from. Many times I can’t define a design until I get the first object into place. In this case it’s a birch log from a bundle I purchased 1/2 off at Michael’s that I happen to see close to check out. These babies were perfect specimens, a great price, so what the heck?! Yup, sometimes I “let go and spend a little dough”.
The flowers and greens were purchased at permanent flower supplier in LA, International Silk Inc. that has incredible deals. They buy left overs from major manufacturers, so you get quality product at a great price. They ship as well with a $100 minimum (easy to get there!). I was in the area so I stopped by. I was definitely a kid in a candy store! The product from this supplier is what I used in this permanent design, although you can find similar items at Michaels.
Fall is that time of year when we start getting motivated to decorate and create magic in our homes. Summer is gone, the creative mojo is kicking in, excitement is building. This short video shows how your everyday accessories mix right in with some holiday fresh and dried goods that you pick up at your favorite craft store, blending with items your precious yard (or your friendly neighbor) has that is begging you to gather up. It is exciting to take what you already have and give it a new spin. Try different things; if they don’t look right, rework the setting till your satisfied. Always remember the world wasn’t built in a day, so have fun creating!
These two prints are the perfect size for any area in your home, a bit contemporary in their interpretation of nature while maintaining the love of birds we all seem to gravitate to. With nature as the base adding willow and moss gives the prints more of a 3-D feel. These goods were purchased at World Market, quite a find for the price I might add.
After placing the units, grab your willow, moss, and glue gun. This is such a simple way to give your wall pieces more dimension which will turn these little gems into visual art for you or your client to enjoy for years. Go for it, and create with wonder!
